RED III comes into force on November 20, 2023

On October 31 st 2023, the RED III was published in the Official Journal of the European Union, and will officially enter into force on November 20 th, 2023. Member states must transpose the new RED III requirements into national law within 18 months of the directive's entry into force.

Some changes at a glance:

  • Overall Union target: strive for 45 % (mandatory 42, 5 %) renewable energy in line with the REPowerEU plan.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions: To reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 % from 1990 levels by 2030
  •  Bioenergy:

o Principle of cascade use of biomass.

o The material use of biomass is given priority over energy use (exceptions possible)

  • Biomethane: produce 35 billion m3 of sustainable biomethane annually by 2030 at the latest
      • Sustainability aspects must be complied with for all systems from 200 Nm3
  • Transport: combined share of advanced biofuels and biogas to be 1% of transport energy supply in 2025 and at least 5.5 % in 2030 (share of renewable fuels of non-biogenic origin at least 1 %)
